What this template does

A resignation letter is a written notice from the employee to the employer that the employment will end. The template gathers the parties' details, the date of notice, notice period and last day of employment in a simple document that can be signed digitally or on paper.

Submitting your resignation in writing avoids any uncertainty about when the employment ends and which notice period applies. Both you and your employer get a signed copy to rely on — which is valuable if any question later arises about the end date, holiday or final pay.

When do you need this document?

You need this if…

  • You have decided to end your employment
  • You want to resign in writing and obtain a confirmation from the employer
  • You want to clearly state which notice period applies and what your last day of employment will be
  • You need a document to refer to for final pay, employment certificates or unemployment insurance
  • You want to make sure the resignation is properly worded under Swedish employment law

You probably do not need this if…

  • It is the employer who is terminating your employment (different rules apply under the Swedish Employment Protection Act, LAS)
  • You and your employer enter a separate settlement agreement on ending the employment
  • Your employment is fixed-term and ends automatically on the agreed end date

What the resignation includes

The agreement covers the following areas.

Parties

  • The employee's full name and personal identity number
  • The employer's name and company registration number

The resignation

  • Date the notice is submitted
  • Notice period in months
  • Last day of employment
  • Clear statement of resignation from the employee

Signature

  • Place of signing
  • The employee's signature
  • Option to sign digitally or on paper

Important considerations

  1. Unless otherwise agreed, the employee has a one-month notice period under section 11 of the Swedish Employment Protection Act (LAS).
  2. Check your employment contract and any applicable collective bargaining agreement — they may set a longer notice period.
  3. The notice period normally starts to run from the day the employer receives the resignation. Submit it in person, by registered mail or via digital signature so that receipt can be evidenced.
  4. During the notice period you keep the same rights and obligations as before — including pay, holiday and duties — unless otherwise agreed.
  5. Keep a signed copy of the resignation together with the employer's confirmation. You may need it when contacting the unemployment fund or future employers.

Legal validity

A resignation from the employee has no formal form requirements under the Employment Protection Act. It can in principle be oral, but to avoid disputes about what was said and when, written form is always recommended.

By using a written and signed resignation, both you and the employer get clear evidence that the employment has been terminated and which last day of employment applies.

In complex situations — for example ongoing sick leave, parental leave, or where you and the employer are at the same time discussing a settlement on ending the employment — it can be wise to consult your trade union or a lawyer before submitting the resignation.

Create your resignation letter and hand it to your employer with a clear date and notice period.

You have a new job

You have signed a new employment contract and need to resign from your current job with the correct notice period so that start and end dates line up.

You want to end a fixed-term employment early

Some fixed-term employments include an agreed notice period. The template can be used to give written notice in line with the contract.

Frequently asked questions

Does a resignation have to be in writing?

Swedish law does not require written form for an employee's resignation, but it is strongly recommended. Written form avoids uncertainty and disputes about when the resignation was given and which notice period applies.

What notice period do I have?

Under the Employment Protection Act (LAS), the employee has a one-month notice period unless otherwise agreed. Always check your employment contract and any collective bargaining agreement — they may set a longer notice period.

When does the notice period start to run?

The notice period starts to run from the day the employer receives the resignation. Submit it in a way where receipt can be evidenced, such as in person, by registered mail or via digital signing.

Can I withdraw my resignation?

As a rule, a resignation cannot be unilaterally withdrawn once the employer has received it. Withdrawing it requires the employer's consent.

Do I have to give a reason for resigning?

No. As an employee you do not need to give any reason for resigning.

What about holiday and final pay?

You are entitled to pay and any accrued holiday compensation during the notice period under the employment contract and collective agreement. Final pay and holiday compensation are normally paid out in connection with your last day of employment.
