What does the friendly bet agreement do?
The friendly bet agreement is a playful template for documenting a friendly wager between two people — typically ahead of a match, a championship, or a personal challenge. The template helps you clearly describe which match the bet concerns, which teams are playing, the date of the match, and exactly what you are betting on.
The real flair is in the consequence clause: choose from around twenty pre-set, harmlessly embarrassing challenges — from buying Friday fika for a month to wearing the opponent team's jersey at the office for an entire day — or write a fully custom consequence. The agreement includes a legal disclaimer making it clear that the bet is entered into in good friendly spirit and is not legally binding.
When does the friendly bet agreement fit?
This agreement is right for you if…
- You want to formalise a bet ahead of a match, World Cup or derby
- You want it in black and white what the loser actually agreed to
- You want to avoid arguments afterwards about what was really said
- You enjoy raising the stakes with an embarrassing — but harmless — consequence
- You want to be able to sign digitally and save the agreement as proof
- The bet is between colleagues, friends or family members
This agreement is probably not for you if…
- You want the bet to be legally enforceable — winnings from private betting are not enforceable under Swedish law
- It concerns commercial gambling — a licence is required under the Swedish Gambling Act (2018:1138)
- The stake is money or property of significant value — use a regular debt instrument or sales agreement instead
- The consequence risks being illegal, offensive or harmful to anyone
What does the agreement include?
The agreement covers the following areas.
Parties and match details
- Names of both parties
- Home team and away team
- Match date
- Clear identification of which match the bet concerns
Scope of the bet
- Free-text description of exactly what you are betting on
- Option to specify final result, goalscorer or other outcome
- A single, unambiguous wording — no room for later reinterpretation
Consequence for the loser
- 24 pre-set playful consequences to choose from
- Everything from Friday fika and jerseys to baking a cake in the opponent's colours
- Option to write a fully custom consequence in free text
- Built-in reminder to keep the consequence harmless and decent
Legal disclaimer
- Clarifies that the bet is entered into in friendly spirit
- Confirms that the bet is not legally binding
- Reminds the parties not to act illegally or offensively
Confirmation and signing
- Signature block for both parties
- Support for digital signing or printing for manual signature
- The agreement can be saved, shared and shown when the match is over
Things to consider before signing
- Betting between private individuals is not enforceable under Swedish law (cf. Chapter 8, Section 1 of the Gambling Act and older case law on natural obligations). This means no court will force the loser to fulfil the consequence.
- For that reason, the value of the agreement rests on good friendly spirit — choose a counterparty you trust and a consequence you both find funny.
- Describe the bet as precisely as you can. Vague wording is the recipe for a fight when the match is over.
- The consequence must never be illegal, discriminatory, hazardous or offensive to third parties. The template explicitly reminds you of this.
- If something of value is at stake (money, more expensive property, services) — use a regular debt instrument or sales agreement instead, so it becomes legally binding.
- If the consequence is tied to the workplace, double-check that it does not clash with your code of conduct or rub colleagues who were not part of the bet the wrong way.
Is the bet legally binding?
No. The friendly bet agreement is deliberately designed as a friendly agreement without legal binding force. Under Swedish law, winnings from betting between private individuals are a so-called natural obligation — you cannot have the consequence enforced in court if the loser breaks their promise.
This is a design choice, not a flaw: the agreement is meant to document and formalise a friendly bet, not to replace licensed gambling or form the basis of legal claims. The built-in disclaimer makes this explicit.
The agreement can still be signed digitally and saved — which makes it excellent as evidence of what you actually agreed to, even though the value ultimately rests on good sportsmanship.

Typical situations
The office bet ahead of the championship
Two colleagues support different teams ahead of the World Cup final. They fill in the agreement, choose 'Friday fika every Friday for the rest of the tournament' as the consequence, and sign digitally over lunch. The winner has the agreement on their phone when it is time to collect the fika.
The derby bet between friends
Two supporters of rival Stockholm clubs bet on the outcome of the derby. The loser must wear the opponent's jersey at work for an entire day — complete with a selfie sent to the winner's phone.
The family bet about Eurovision
Siblings disagree about which country will win Eurovision. They write a custom consequence in the free-text field: the loser sings the winning entry at the birthday dinner.
The padel challenge between friends
Two padel friends bet on who will win their next match. The loser must act as personal barista for a week. The agreement documents exactly which match counts — so no one can wriggle out with the excuse 'it was only practice'.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sue my friend if they don't fulfil the consequence?
No. Betting between private individuals is not enforceable in Swedish courts. The agreement is a friendly understanding — its value lies in being written down, signed and hard to pretend away, not in legal coercion.
Is private betting for money really allowed in Sweden?
Yes, as long as it concerns occasional private bets between friends and not organised gambling. Anyone arranging gambling for the public needs a licence under the Gambling Act (2018:1138). This template is not intended for monetary stakes of significant value — keep it playful.
What happens if the consequence turns out to be inappropriate?
The agreement includes an explicit reminder that the consequence must not breach the law, public order or decency. If a consequence later turns out to be inappropriate, offensive or hazardous, it should obviously not be carried out — friendly spirit takes precedence.
Do we both have to sign digitally?
No. You can sign digitally directly in the service or print the agreement and sign by hand. Both options work just as well for a friendly bet.
Can we use the same agreement for several matches?
We recommend a new agreement per bet. That keeps the match details, description and consequence crystal clear — and you avoid arguing about whether last season's bet still applies.
How is this different from a regular agreement?
A regular agreement is legally binding and can be enforced in court. The friendly bet agreement is deliberately a natural obligation — it documents your understanding, but its power comes from your shared will to keep your word, not from the legal system.
