A child travel consent is a written confirmation from the custodians that a child may take a specific trip — either alone, with only one of the custodians, or together with another adult. The document states who is travelling with the child, where the trip is going, how long it lasts and how the custodians can be reached.
Swedish law does not impose any formal requirement for a separate travel consent, but in practice it is often requested by airlines, border police and authorities in other countries — especially when the child is travelling without both custodians or to a country that checks parental consent at entry or exit. A clear written consent reduces the risk of being stopped at the border or at check-in.
The agreement covers the following areas.
Swedish law does not prescribe any specific form requirements for a child travel consent. For the document to work in practice, however, it should be in writing, signed by all custodians, and contain clear details about the child, the trip and the accompanying adult.
Before international travel, the consent is often checked by airlines or border authorities. Some countries have their own form requirements — always verify what applies for the specific destination well before departure, for example via the embassy or the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
In more complex situations, such as long stays abroad, relocation or ongoing custody disputes, it can be wise to also consult a lawyer or social services before booking the trip.
Create your travel consent and sign it before the trip begins.

The child accompanies a grandparent on a trip abroad. Both custodians give their consent and are listed with their contact details.
The child goes on a camp, tournament or school trip with a responsible leader. The consent identifies the leader as the accompanying adult and lists the trip details.
The child is booked as an unaccompanied minor with the airline. The consent supplements the airline's own form and gathers all contact details in one place.
Yes, it is a written consent from the custodians. It does not, however, replace passports, visas or other mandatory travel documents — always check the destination country's specific requirements before departure.
If the child has two custodians, both should normally sign. Where one person has sole custody, only that custodian needs to sign — tick the sole-custody box in the template.
For travel within Sweden or to Swedish-speaking countries, a Swedish version is enough. For other international trips, we recommend the English version, or that you bring both.
Witnesses are not required for the consent to be valid between the parties. Some countries or authorities may, however, require notarisation or an apostille — always check the requirements well before departure.
The consent applies to the specific travel period stated in the document. For recurring or longer trips, a new consent should be drawn up before each trip.
If a custodian is unable or unwilling to sign and you have joint custody, you usually need to raise the matter with social services or the court. The municipal family law unit (familjerättsenheten) can provide guidance.
